This half-term, our R.E.  topic is 'Signs and Symbols'. Please complete the following tasks over the course of two weeks.  Please ensure that your child has a quiet, reflective space when they complete their activities.

Lesson 1 - Welcoming a child into God's Family.  

Watch the video below before completing the activity.

Lesson 2 -

Your child need to look at the pictures below then together discuss the key questions before completing the activities.  They can also watch the video again from the previous lesson to help them

Some key questions: 

  • What does it feel like to be welcomed and for someone to call you by your name?
  • Who welcomes the baby?
  • What is the baby welcomed into?
  • What is the first question the priest asks the family?
  • What do the family do?
  • What do you think this symbol means?


Design an invitation card to a baptism. Explain how the baby will be welcomed.

Lesson 3 - 

In this lesson your child needs to  look at the pictures below about the different objects that are used in Baptism then think about what their meaning.  Please discuss these with your child then discuss the key questions. 


Some key questions:

  • What symbols have you noticed?
  • What do you think those symbols mean?
  • What have we learnt about water in science?
  • What do you think the water symbolises in Baptism?
  • What are the words used by the priest as he pours the water over the baby’s head?
  • What is the meaning of these words for the baby?



Make a list of the signs and symbols used in this part of the baptism and what they mean.


Lesson 4 - 

This lesson we will look in detail what the candle in baptism symbolises.

Look at the photos below then discuss the meaning of the candle. Also, discuss the key questions.


Some key questions:

  • What does the candle symbolise?
  • How do the parents help their children follow Jesus?
  • What are the signs that someone has the light of Christ within them?
  • Why does everyone pray the Our Father at Baptism?



Design a baptismal candle using some of the signs and symbols of Baptism.
