Early Years

Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent -

Our intention in the Early Years Foundation Stage at Holy Cross Catholic Primary is to work in partnership with parents and carers to encourage independent, happy learners who thrive in school and reach their full potential.                                          Our curriculum is designed to provide first-hand learning experiences and learning opportunities in the inside and outside environment which consolidate and deepen knowledge to ensure children meet their next steps.                                                We place strong emphasis on the religious, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of all our pupils. Every child is recognised as a unique individual and we celebrate and welcome the differences within our school community.                        We promote positive attitudes to learning which allow the children to develop interpersonal skills, build resilience and become creative, critical thinkers for learning and future success.

Implementation -

In our nursery and reception classes we follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. Children will be learning skills, acquiring new knowledge and demonstrating their understanding through 7 areas of learning and development. Children mostly develop the 3 prime areas communication and language, physical development and personal, social and emotional development first. These prime areas are the most essential for children healthy development and future learning.  As children grow, the prime areas will help them to develop skills in the 4 specific areas of literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, expressive arts and design. The 7 areas are used to plan the children’s learning and activities. Children in the EYFS learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking which takes place both indoors and outside. The Holy Cross Catholic Primary school EYFS Curriculum engages all children and ensures that all children make good progress from their starting points. The school has recognised the use of clear, focused learning intentions as an effective tool in gaining intended learning outcomes. Staff working within the EYFS receive regular training to ensure their interactions with the children reflect current best practise, are valuable, support each individual child and move learning on. Child initiated learning is valued and encouraged; we provide opportunities for children to reflect on their learning and contribute to the curriculum planning.  Through adult led learning we introduce new concepts and knowledge. Each half termly topic is enhanced through a variety of first-hand experiences, visits or visitors. Parents are valued as first educators and we encourage parent’s involvement in school life and in sharing information about their children’s development and learning in home environment.
