COVID-19 School Closure Important Info

Home Learning during School Closure Information

Thank you to all those parents who responded to our questionnaire.  This has enabled us to provide a selection of both paper-based worksheets and booklets and a variety of online learning for your child.

We understand that the next few weeks and months are going to be a difficult and unsettled time and we want to be able to support our pupils, their families and our staff as best we can.  If you think you may need additional pastoral support, further information is provided below.

We would expect most children to carry out home learning tasks for at least 3-4 hours per day.  We have suggested a timetable (from Yr1-Yr6) below for you to follow with your child, if you wish, as keeping to a routine will be important for them.

9:00-10:30am – English activities (change activity every half an hour).

10:30-11:00am – Breaktime and physical activity

11:00-12:00pm – Maths/Science Activities (change activity every half an hour)

12:00-1:00pm – Lunch (support your children to prepare the lunches with you and wash up afterwards)

1:00-2:30pm – Online activities

If you have more than one child and they are sharing a computer, then alternate so that one child does paper-based work in the morning and the other in the afternoon, so they can all have access to the computers.

Class teachers will update the class webpages on the school website (www.holycrossprimary.com) 2 to 3 times a week with different challenges, tips and rewards.  We have set up a class email that will be checked 2 to 3 times a week so if you have any questions or need help with your child’s learning you can email the class teacher.  Please bear in mind that we also have a duty of care to our staff and if they become unwell, we will try to get another member of staff to reply to your emails.  Staff will not respond to emails during the Easter holidays.

The email addresses are as follows:

nursery@holycrossprimary.thurrock.sch.uk

reception@holycrossprimary.thurrock.sch.uk

year1@holycrossprimary.thurrock.sch.uk

year2@holycrossprimary.thurrock.sch.uk

year3@holycrossprimary.thurrock.sch.uk

year4@holycrossprimary.thurrock.sch.uk

year5@holycrossprimary.thurrock.sch.uk

year6@holycrossprimary.thurrock.sch.uk

You can also use this as a chance to encourage your children to learn as you can take photos of your child learning, or of a piece of work that you think they have done really well and email it to their class teacher.  This can be uploaded then to the class webpage so that they get to see what their friends are doing.

Children should primarily be using Purple Mash - www.purplemash.com/holycrosscps for online learning.  This will be supported by Times tables Rockstar’s and Oxford Reading Buddy programmes.

You should have your child’s login and passwords for all three of these websites.  This has been sent home again to all children today. Please check your child’s bags or reading records first, then email the office (office@holycrossprimary.thurrock.sch.uk) if you do not have it.

There are a variety of activities for children to complete as well as activities they can choose to do themselves.

All children should be reading every day.  15 minutes at least for Reception and Key Stage 1 and 30 minutes for KS2.  This can be an actual reading book or an online book from Oxford Reading Buddy. Please continue to sign your child’s reading log daily when they have read so that they can still receive their certificates on their return to school.

All children from Year 1- Year 6 should be using Times Table Rockstar daily for at least 15 minutes.

To support with Maths learning you can go onto YouTube and search for White Rose Maths and your child’s year group; they have informative videos showing how you can support your child to complete maths activities.

If you have access to a printer, you can register at www.twinkl.co.uk/offer with password parentstwinklhelps for a month of free resources and online activities and parent support guidance.

Year 5 and 6

Alongside the online work, we are sending home at least 12 SATS workbooks for Years 5 and 6 to complete.  We would be looking at them completing the equivalent of 3/4 workbook a day.  However, all children work at different paces and you can judge what is appropriate for your child.  The majority of the work books have the answers in the back.  Please cut these out so that you can keep them and use them to give feedback to your child on whether the work they have completed is correct or not.

The 12 work books plus the online learning, should provide enough work for the equivalent of 20 school days at least.

Year 3 and 4

Alongside the online work, we are sending home at least 5 workbooks or textbooks for Years 3 and 4 to complete.  We would be looking at them completing the equivalent of ½ a workbook a day or 5/6 pages of a textbook.  However, all children work at different paces and you can judge what is appropriate for your child.  The majority of the work books have the answers in the back.  Please cut these out so that you can keep them and use them to give feedback to your child on whether the work they have completed is correct or not.

For the textbook activities, please complete the work in the exercise books provided and put the page number at the top.  The work provided, plus the online learning should last your year 3 or 4 child the equivalent of 20 school days at least.

Year 1 and 2

Alongside the online work, we are sending home at least 5 workbooks or textbooks for Years 1 and 2 to complete.  We would be looking at them completing the equivalent of 1/3 of a workbook a day or 3/4 pages of a textbook.  However, all children work at different paces and you can judge what is appropriate for your child.  The majority of the work books have the answers in the back.  Please cut these out so that you can keep them and use them to give feedback to your child on whether the work they have completed is correct or not.

Children should also be practicing their phonics every day.  They can do this at www.phonicsplay.co.uk  username: march20 password: home

For the textbook activities, please complete the work in the exercise books provided and put the page number at the top.  The work provided, plus the online learning should last your year 1 or 2 child the equivalent of 20 school days at least.

Nursery and Reception

As Nursery and Reception follow a child-led, play based curriculum it is much more difficult to set work for them to complete.  They have access to Purple Mash and should be completing the Mini Mash activities set for them.  Further information is also provided on the class web page.

Children should also be practicing their phonics every day.  They can do this at www.phonicsplay.co.uk  username: march20 password: home

Use the time you are able to support your child home learning to read with them, sing songs with them – especially phonics and number songs, talk to them.  Play with whatever toys you have at home with them.  You can create different role play areas with different toys and theme the play you are doing with them.

Play and Physical Activities

Unlike the holidays, self-isolation and enforced school closures means you need to find opportunities to carry out physical activities at home.  Taking your children out for a walk is okay, as long as you are not going to the park or busy public places.  If you have a garden you can use, let them play outside as often as possible.  If you do not have a garden, you can do exercise activities together as a family.  YouTube has many exercise videos you can use.  The children particularly enjoy ‘Just Dance’ and ‘Dough Disco’ videos from YouTube.  You can also search for ‘brain gym’ activities that you can do together with your child.

R.E

As a Catholic school, Religious Education is the core of our curriculum.  During this time, we ask you to download the school prayer book from the website and learn the appropriate prayers with your children.  They can then achieve their prayer awards on their return to school.

Creativity

We also encourage you to reassure your children during this time and help develop their love of learning.  Enjoy spending time with your children; bake a cake; teach them how to cook; share some traditional stories from the wide range of cultures we represent at Holy Cross; take a nature walk; create a collage and enjoy the learning experiences as much as possible.  You can also think about creative topics that your child can explore; respond to their interests – dinosaurs, history, science and use the books that we send home to share their learning.  This is a unique opportunity for you to enjoy finding out about how your child learns and what engages them, so please be creative with this and enjoy the experience with your children.

Pastoral Support

We appreciate this is going to be a difficult time for everyone, including the staff and we want to be able to support everyone as best you can.  If you have any difficulties with the academic content of home learning, use the email address above to contact your child’s class teacher.

However, if you have additional concerns, behaviour concerns, well-being concerns, if you are affected financially or your child receives free school meals and you are struggling to find food, please contact pastoral@holycrossprimary.thurrock.sch.uk .  This email address is confidential and will be answered by Mrs. Westrop or Mrs. Power and will be checked on a daily basis.  We will try to find solutions to your difficulties or put you in touch with someone who can.

Remember: please check your class webpage for regular updates.  If you have concerns about the work your child is completing, please email your child’s class teacher.  If you have any other pastoral concerns, then contact us on the pastoral email address.  If the school is closed, we will only be able to communicate via email.

Thank you for your continued co-operation in this difficult time and we will try to keep you as informed as possible.
